This past week I finished the novel, The Pursuit of Happyness, a memoir of Chris Gardner. His son, Chris Jr., is a relatively minor character in terms of dialogue and number of parts he is in. However, he has a major impact on the main character, his father, Chris Gardner, as Chris Sr. does all he can to keep Chris Jr. safe and healthy, even if it means Chris Sr. has to to go hungry. The main theme of this book is the title itself: "the pursuit of happiness". Chris Jr. has an impact on theme, because Chris Gardner always wanted a son, and in Chris Jr., he got one.
Chris Jr. also impacts this theme because he motivates Chris Sr. to do whatever he can to make a better and "happier" life for him and Chris Jr. If Chris Jr. was more present in the book, the plot may have changed some, if he was more questioning of his surroundings, but Chris Jr. was a mainly happy child. This could have strengthened the plot of the story because Chris Sr.'s life may have been harder as he would have to answer many difficult questions from Chris Jr. However, I believe that this would have made the story worse. In the end, this book was a great book.

Hey Jacob, I was reading your blog I noticed that there was no real conflict so I was wondering if the main conflict is him just not being happy? In that case you said that he is a happy child.
